Frequently Asked Questions
Finding a therapist who is a good fit is a two way street. The first phone call as well as the first session(s) serve as a time for you and the Sunrise Psychology clinician to get to know each other and see how you work together. If it mutually seems like a match—great! If not, we will help you to find another therapist who may be a better fit. If you are seeking therapy for your child, we look for fit with both you as the caregiver and with your child, as both are crucial to move forward successfully. We also acknowledge that trust takes time, so we will continue to check in on how therapy is working for you, and see how we can together make therapy work for you.
We start with a 20-minute free consult call to get background information and answer any questions that you may have. After this, if you decide to proceed, you will be invited to join the Sunrise Psychology NY Patient portal, through which you will complete consent forms, billing documentation, and an online intake questionnaire.
Once the paperwork is completed, we have our first session. The first 1-3 sessions are used to get to know each other, review a thorough history, and complete any self-report measures to seek diagnostic clarity. If you are seeking services for your child, this early chapter often involves a caregiver session to hear your unique and important perspective. The goal is ultimately to collaborate and develop a treatment plan together to guide the rest of treatment.
All staff are considered out of network (OON) providers, which means we do not work directly with any insurance network. We do provide all clients with a "Superbill" which outlines your monthly expenses as well as includes information that most insurances require to approve reimbursement.
If you are unsure about your coverage, please contact your insurance company and ask about out of network reimbursement for behavioral health/ outpatient psychotherapy. We recommend you call the number on the back of your insurance card and ask the following questions:
Do I have out-of-network mental/behavioral health benefits? Typically an out-of-network plan is referred to as Preferred Provider Organization Plan (PPO) or Point-Of-Service Plan (POS).
Do I have an out-of-network deductible that has to be met first before I get reimbursed? Has any amount of my deductible been covered this year?
What is my co-insurance amount? Co-insurances typically range between 20%-40% of the session cost.
What is the usual and customary rate covered by my insurance for outpatient psychotherapy (CPT code 90834).
The session rates range based on which clinician you work with, but tend to start at $225- $275 per session. Longer (e.g. 60-90 minute) and shorter (e.g. 30 minute) sessions are prorated accordingly. We accept cash, check, card, and HSA through Simple Practice. There are a limited number of sliding scale slots available.
In addition to in-person sessions, We also meet with clients via telehealth through a secure platform through Simple Practice.Much like in-person therapy, it is important to find a private space to have your sessions. We can help problem solve this with you, if needed. Otherwise, sessions tend to work similar to in-person therapy.
While some people prefer the convenience of telehealth, it also does not work as well for others. We can use part of our phone consultation to see if telehealth is a viable option for you.
Standard therapy sessions are 45 minutes long and appointments are often held weekly. Some people prefer meeting more or less frequently throughout the course of therapy. Please discuss your preferences with your therapist to find an arrangement that works for you and your treatment goals.
If you have other questions, we offer a free 20-minute phone consultation call. We can discuss any questions or concerns you have to ensure we are a good fit before starting your first session.
