Hello, I'm Dr. Hanna Cohen

Licensed Clinical Psychologist & Founder of Sunrise Psychology NY P.C.

I provide individual therapy to adults, teens, and children — and I've been doing this work for over a decade. I love being a psychologist and working with people. The focus of therapy is on you, but let me share a bit more about me.

My approach is grounded in psychodynamic and attachment-based theory, which helps me understand each person within the context of their history, relationships, and life experiences. I also draw heavily from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and a range of specialized evidence-based models, so our work together can be both meaningful and useful in your day-to-day life. The core of my work is trauma-informed, meaning I view each person in the context of their past — and I firmly believe in asking "what happened to you?" rather than "what is wrong with you?" Having worked across outpatient, academic, community mental health, and hospital settings, I've come to believe deeply that the therapeutic relationship is central to meaningful change and healing.

Some of my specialized training includes Pain Reprocessing Therapy (PRT), Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing Therapy (EMDR), Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), Trauma-Focused CBT (TF-CBT), Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP), SPACE, and C-DBT.

My Approach to Therapy

My approach is warm, adaptable, and down-to-earth — and yes, occasionally infused with humor (though you can be the judge of whether I'm actually funny). I think therapy mirrors everyday life — sometimes it is heavy, sometimes reflective, sometimes it can be light. It is all welcome.

I place a strong emphasis on the therapeutic relationship, which means creating a space where you feel genuinely safe to explore, be honest, and move at your own pace. I listen carefully and take what you bring seriously, while also playing an active, collaborative role in our work. I am not a quiet or blank slate therapist. My goal is to help you feel understood in the room — which over time expands to having something real to take with you outside of it.

I value authenticity. I'll bring my real self into sessions, and I'll ask you to bring yours. And if that feels hard or scary, that's exactly where we can start.

Ensuring Our Fit

My practice is an open and inclusive environment. All people are welcome and embraced.

There's no obligation to stay with the first therapist you meet — including me or any of my team members. If at any point you feel we're not the right fit, I'll support you in finding someone who is. Patient feedback matters to me, and I check in regularly on how therapy is working for you.

Beyond My Practice

Outside of Sunrise, I serve as Assistant Chief Psychologist at Westchester Jewish Community Services' Trager Lemp Center, a community-based trauma program where I work with survivors of trauma across all ages and backgrounds.

I also supervise doctoral psychology externs, interns, postdoctoral fellows, and social workers — work I find genuinely meaningful. I enjoy leading community presentations on trauma-informed care, engagement skills, and trauma therapies, and I serve on the Executive Board of the Westchester County Psychological Association (WCPA).

Outside of work, you can find me outdoors with my husband and our puppy Koufax, spending time with friends and family, tending to my plants, reading — and yes, watching TV. I'm a person after all.

Diversity Statement

I am committed to creating an inclusive, affirming space for people of all cultures, races, ethnicities, religions, gender identities, and sexual orientations. I identify as a white, Jewish, cisgender, heterosexual, able-bodied woman, and I recognize that identities and lived experiences shape what people need from therapy. I welcome those conversations openly.
